Mark Pegus had a career best day in the saddle at Mildura on Monday riding five winners, one shy of the Victorian record shared by his late father Tassie.
Pegus, who had a ride in each of the eight races on the program, opened the day with victory aboard Bel Gold ($3.80) in the Betfair 3YO Maiden Plate (1200m) for Kyneton trainer Neil Dwyer.
He and Dyer made it a double when Belle Ez ($3.70) took out the Mildura Cup Carnival 19 & 20 May Maiden Plate (1000m).
Pegus then guided Julia Jean ($5) in the Betfair 0-62 Hcp (1000m) for local trainer John Castleman and Ruling Party ($4.80) in the Centrebet 0-72 Hcp (1200m) for Broken Hill trainer Barry Murray.
His fifth winner came in the seventh race, the Trentham Estate 0-62 Hcp (1800m) aboard Leaping Leroy ($3.50 fav) for Geelong trainer Sonny Coombes.
Pegus’ father Tassie rode the card (six winners) at Mildura on May 4, 1974 as an 18-year-old apprentice.
Tassie Pegus, who died of an asthma attack in 1998, equalled the feat of John Salisbury who rode the six-race card at Mildura on February 23, 1963 while Charlie Hartnup did the same at Avoca in 1956.
Dean Yendall rode six winners at Mildura on July 5 last year.
